With the aim of providing support to low-income people, California is piloting dozens of guaranteed income programs. One of these pilots is going to take place in Los Angeles County, where a group of residents will be eligible for payments worth $1,000 per month; the program’s name is Breathe.

According to the county’s website, the payments will be sent for two years. But who will receive the money?

New $1,000 Checks in California: Who is Eligible

The Breathe Program is intended solely for residents of Los Angeles County who have been foster children, as its primary goal is to “provide the opportunity to 'breathe' easier knowing they have greater financial security.”

To be eligible for the program, you must be a resident of Los Angeles County, at least 21 years old but under the age of 24 as of September 1, 2023, and have been in foster care up to or after age 18. You must also have an income equal to or less than 100 percent of the area median income for a one-person household or 120 percent for a household of two or more people.

In addition, applicants must have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. It is important to mention that only 200 people will be elected. Add a total of 1,200 beneficiaries if those chosen from the previous year are taken into account.

How to request payments of $1,000 dollars?

Applications can be made electronically through the program’s website. The admission process starts on 20 June at 6:00 am. and closes on 3 July at 11:59 p.m.

Those who are eligible will receive the money monthly through direct deposit to a debit card.
