New $900 tax refund: in which state and how to request it

The state of Wyoming has opened the application process to receive a tax refund of just over $900. 2,000 more households are expected to qualify this year.

The state of Wyoming has opened the application process to receive a tax refund of just over $900. 2,000 more households are expected to qualify this year.

In March 2024, Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon signed four bills that will reduce property taxes for those Wyoming residents who need it most. This legislative package included an extension to the Property Tax Rebate Program.

At the Governor's request, the Legislature appropriated an additional $20 million to further expand the program and ensure that more homeowners in need are eligible to participate while noting that amount may not be enough.

“I want to thank the Legislature for endorsing the importance of this program to Wyoming taxpayers, and for  providing the resources needed to get additional relief to those most impacted by increased assessments,” Governor Gordon said in a statement. It is expected that an additional 2,000 taxpayers will qualify this year with the increased income level according to the Wyoming Department of Revenue.

The Property Tax Rebate Program helps eligible Wyoming homeowners who are struggling to pay their property taxes, particularly those on fixed or limited incomes. In 2023, the program helped more than 9,000 Wyoming families, with an average refund of approximately $938. We explain how to request it.

$900 Tax Refund in Wyoming: How to Apply

As established by the program, homeowners can apply for a refund of up to one-half of the median residential property tax amount or 75 percent of their 2023 property tax bill, whichever is less.

In order to apply, you must meet some eligibility requirements. You may qualify if:

  • You own your house
  • You have paid your 2023 property taxes on that home in a timely manner and have a receipt for it
  • You have been a resident of Wyoming for the past five years.
  • You occupied residence for no less than 9 months of the fiscal year.

Additionally, Wyoming residents must meet certain asset requirements:

  • Your total personal assets do not exceed $156,900 per adult household member.

In other words, if you own other real estate, bank accounts, and investments, their value cannot exceed $156,900 per adult household member. However, you can exclude the value of your home, one car for each adult member of your household and any retirement accounts (IRAs, 401K plans, cash value of life insurance policies, medical savings, etc.) or

  • Your total property tax bill exceeds more than 10% of your total reported income, then this asset limit would not apply.

Some income requirements must also be met:

  • Your household income is at or below 145% of the median household income of the county in which you reside or the state median ($107,184), whichever is greater. Here is the table with county limits.

How to request a refund?
