After two years of events canceled or with restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic, in 2022 the New Year’s celebrations finally return to “normal”, since the restrictions on travel, transportation, gatherings, etc., have decreased considerably.

New Year’s in the USA: will there be restrictions due to the coronavirus on New Year’s Eve?

Although you no longer have to present your vaccination card to enter any place and face coverings are no longer required indoors or on public transportation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to urge Americans and tourists to get vaccinated and continue to follow their guidelines on isolation and precautions for people with covid-19.

On the other hand, although the CDC order requiring masks on public transportation and in transportation centers is no longer in effect, health authorities continue to recommend that people use mask indoors on public transportation at this time.

The use of face masks is also recommended as covid, flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are fueling a national wave of respiratory illnesses.

Travel restrictions

On the other hand, there are no travel restrictions within the United States and its territories, such as Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands. In addition, US citizens and lawful permanent residents traveling abroad will not need a return-entry covid-19 test or show proof of a coronavirus vaccine to re-enter the country.

However, there are still two travel-related mandates for foreign visitors:

  • Vaccination Mandate: Foreign visitors may only enter the United States if they are fully vaccinated.
  • Mask Requirements: Currently, three New York City metropolitan airports (JFK, LaGuardia, and Stewart International) have an indoor mask mandate. However, the use of a mask is still optional on most airlines and public transport terminals.
