“No thanks”: Greenland slammed the door in Vance’s face despite U.S. efforts

Danish media report that the Vances were snubbed by the locals disinterested in engaging with the US vice president and his wife.

Update:

US Vice President JD Vance led an expedition to Greenland in a scaled-down version of a trip that had angered both Copenhagen and Nuuk.

Speaking at the US military base, the Ohio native claimed that Greenland is now less secure now than it was a few decades ago and the Arctic island would be better off under the security of the United States than under Denmark’s leadership.

“Our argument really is with the leadership of Denmark, which is under-invested in Greenland and under-invested in its security architecture. That simply must change. It is the policy of the United States that that will change,” Vance told reporters at the U.S. military base at Pituffik in Greenland.

“I think that you’d be a lot better ... coming under the United States’ security umbrella than you have been under Denmark’s security umbrella,” Vance said.

Locals turn their backs on Vance

Apparently ahead of the trip, US officials were reportedly traveling around Greenland looking for locals who wanted to receive a visit from the Second Lady, according to a report from Danish TV 2.

Nuuk based Tupilak Travel initially had agreed to welcome Vance and his wife but later made a u-turn stating: “After closer consideration, however, we have now informed the consulate that we do not want her visit, as we cannot accept the underlying agenda and will not be part of the press show that, quite, of course, comes with it. No thanks to nice visit… Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders," the company said.

US president Donald Trump has taken a particular interest in Greenland since taking power in January of this year claiming that the island is “very, very important” for U.S. “military security.”
