The area around Ponce de Leon Inlet, which is just north of where most shark bites occur, has a strong tidal flow. This creates a high-energy environment with a lot of wave action. The churned-up water leads to poor visibility, making it difficult for sharks to distinguish between their natural prey and the arms and legs of swimmers and surfers.
