Rafael Alonso, a human resources expert, addressed a question many people have asked themselves at some point in a TikTok video: “It’s never too late to change jobs, and here’s why.”

“If you’re still in your job, it’s because you have bills to pay. You can’t just quit overnight since, like everyone else, you need the income. That’s completely normal,” he explains.

According to Alonso, this is the main reason people remain in their jobs, even when those jobs are negatively affecting them and harming their mental health.

People who stay in jobs that don’t fulfill them often begin to normalize waking up unmotivated, feeling irritable, or living with a constant sense of discomfort, until they start wondering what they should do.

“Then one day you realize you’re no longer the same person. You’ve changed, you have less energy, and it’s hard to enjoy life even outside of work. As the years go by, that feeling of emptiness doesn’t go away,” the expert notes.

Alonso points out that while it may seem like it’s too late to change jobs, the opposite is true. That moment is often when people realize they’ve been making decisions on autopilot and that their current situation no longer fits who they are. At that point, there are two options: keep enduring it or accept that a change is necessary.

Exploring different options

“Of course, I’m not going to tell you to quit your job tomorrow. There are many ways to redirect your career, and it all starts with making simple decisions. Instead of immediately thinking about changing jobs, start by exploring different options,” Alonso says.

He recommends surrounding yourself with people who are already doing what you would like to do, seeking out information, and spending time in spaces where those topics are discussed.

If it’s hard for you to connect with people in person, you can start on platforms like LinkedIn, where you can join conversations that interest you without it feeling awkward,” he advises.

In conclusion, Alonso says that what blocks or stresses many people is not a lack of opportunities, but the fear of losing what they already have.
