Update:

Though many saw the breakup between billionaire Elon Musk and President Donald Trump coming from a mile away, few were prepared for just how personal—and public—the attacks would become.

Musk’s assault on the ‘one big beautiful bill’

Following his departure from the White House, where he served as a leading figure at the “Department of Government Efficiency,” Musk quickly turned on the president by criticizing his “one big beautiful bill” passed by House Republicans. The bill extends several tax cuts from the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and significantly increases spending for the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security, reaching historic levels.

Musk called the bill an “abomination” and urged Senate Republicans to send it back to the House. As the X CEO began posting about the legislation on his social media platform, the criticism grew increasingly personal, especially after the president began firing back with his own written barbs at his former “first bestie.”

President Trump responded that Elon was ‘going crazy’ and that he had asked him to leave the administration. The White House and some allies of the president have said that Musk’s frustration stems from the fact that the bill cuts subsidies for renewable energy and the EV tax credit. Musk has disputed these claims, explaining that he has always supported ending subsidies for renewable energy, so long as those for fossil fuels are also eliminated.

The president also told the media that he wished Elon had attacked him and not the bill... he wouldn’t have to wait long. In a since-deleted post, Musk claimed the FBI had withheld the Epstein files because the president appeared in them. The tit-for-tat continued, with Musk warning that Trump’s tariffs—policies he had criticized even while in the administration—would push the U.S. economy into a recession in the second half of the year.

Even for billionaires, retrospect is 20/20

However, on Tuesday night, it appears that Musk had reflected on his behavior and admitted that in some posts, he had taken it “too far.”
