School closings due to weather alert: which areas will be affected?

Severe weather sweeping across the nation this week, which will push into New England on Thursday, has interrupted normal operations for some schools.

School closures and delays due to severe weather

A strong storm front is plowing across the United States this week delivering heavy rain and snow along with strong winds and tornados. In its path, over a quarter million Americans have been left without power.

On Thursday, the powerful storm will push into New England dumping one to two inches of snow per hour in parts of New Hampshire and Maine. Snowfall accumulation could be as much as two feet.

School closings due to weather alert: which areas will be affected?

The severe weather still pounding parts of the US as well as the damage and the extensive power outages left in its wake have interrupted normal operations for some schools. Here’s a look a school closure and delay announcements in areas affected:


Over a dozen school districts in Massachusetts won’t be open on Thursday due to the foul weather conditions.

New Hampshire & Vermont

The severe weather including heavy snow and strong winds will make traveling in Northern New England treacherous. Numerous schools will not hold classes on Thursday or delay the start of the day.


Local channel WMTW in Maine is tracking three active weather alerts and says that currently, there are 370 school closing or delays in the state.

New York

Parts of the Adirondacks in Upstate New York could see as much as two feet of snow. Several daycare and school districts will delay the start of the day by 2 to 3 hours, there are no school closings announced.

Ohio & West Virginia

The Ohio Valley got slammed by the powerful storm this week. Several tornados were reported along the border of Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia.

In Ohio there are closures announced for Elgin Local Schools in Marion County, Franklin Local School in Muskingum County and Morgan Local Schools in Morgan County on Thursday. West Virginia Department of Education has listed closings and delays for schools in the state’s eight counties.

Wisconsin & Michigan

Households in counties in the Michigan’s UP and northeast Wisconsin on either side of Green Bay make up the majority of customers experiencing power outages in those states. This has resulted in eight school closures being announced.
