Scientists agree: Sugar and hunger influence human memory
A study by researchers in Paris, based on experiments with fruit flies, indicates that sugar plays a key role in memory function.
Sugar and hunger shape human memory. That is the conclusion reached by a team of French scientists at the Paris Laboratory of Brain Plasticity, whose findings were published in the prestigious journal Nature.
The research, led by neuroscientist Pierre-Yves Plaçais, was conducted using fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), insects from the Drosophilidae family that take their name from their habit of feeding on fermenting fruit. The study suggests that an organism’s metabolic state plays a direct role in how long-term memories are consolidated.
How did the fruit-fly study work?
During the experiments, researchers exposed the flies to a range of stimuli and analyzed how their nutritional status affected their ability to retain learned associations. In particular, the team focused on a specific group of neurons identified in the insects’ brains - known as Gr43a neurons - which are responsible for detecting fructose.
These neurons act as internal sensors of the body’s energy state. When the animal consumes sugar, the neurons activate and send signals to the brain that help stabilize memories after learning has taken place. In short, they are essential to the formation of long-term memory.
The scientists went a step further, examining when sugar has the greatest impact. Their conclusion was that its effect is strongest during memory consolidation, rather than during the learning process itself. In other words, sugar proved to be a decisive factor hours later, after the initial experience. For now, the research has been limited to insects, and further studies in humans will be required before drawing definitive conclusions.
