Scientists confirm it: cold water has these important mental health benefits

Multiple researchers observed psychological benefits with brief five-minute immersions in cold seawater.

Cold water immersion may have positive effects on mental health, and science is gradually beginning to confirm it with solid evidence. A study conducted by researchers at University of Chichester concluded that spending just a few minutes in cold seawater can significantly improve mood, even during very short exposures.

The research analyzed more than one hundred young adults who reported feeling down, stressed, or in a low mood. Participants were divided into several groups, and some of them remained in seawater at approximately 55 degrees Fahrenheit for 5, 10, or 20 minutes. The remaining participants did not enter the water so researchers could make comparisons.

The results showed that those who took part in the immersion experienced a clear improvement in their emotional state, while the control group showed little to no change. Researchers also discovered something that caught their attention: a five-minute immersion was nearly as effective as staying in the cold water for twenty minutes.

The study also observed significant physical changes during the experiment. Body temperature dropped quickly, and heart rate increased noticeably during the first few minutes. According to the scientists, this reaction is part of what is known as “cold shock,” a natural response the body experiences when exposed to very low temperatures.

Researchers believe that this intense activation of the body may be linked to the release of chemicals and neurotransmitters associated with feelings of well-being and improved mood. Although more studies are still needed to fully understand the mechanism, the findings reinforce the idea that cold water can positively influence the brain.

Even so, the authors of the study caution that these practices should be carried out carefully. The research was conducted under professional supervision with healthy participants and strict safety measures in place. For that reason, they recommend that people with heart conditions or preexisting medical issues consult a doctor before trying cold water immersion.
