Update:

A team of researchers has developed a new nickel‑iron battery inspired by a prototype Thomas Edison patented back in 1901 — and it may offer a low‑cost, long‑lasting way to store renewable energy at scale.

Prototype battery has 30-year lifespan

Edison’s original design took an extremely long time to charge, which ultimately limited its use. But the modern version, created by a group of scientists that includes researchers from the University of California, can recharge in seconds and endure more than 12,000 charge cycles. In practical terms, that means a lifespan of more than 30 years.

Edison first pursued the technology in the early 20th century as a power source for the world’s first electric cars. At the time, electric vehicles briefly outpaced gasoline models in the United States, but battery limitations — combined with the rapid rise of the combustion engine — pushed Edison’s idea to the sidelines.

Today’s researchers have reimagined the concept using nanoscale materials. They’ve built tiny clusters of iron and nickel atoms, guided by proteins and connected to ultra‑thin conductive materials. This architecture dramatically increases the battery’s internal surface area, speeding up chemical reactions and allowing electricity to flow much faster — which is why the battery can charge almost instantly.

If the technology scales, it could be a major breakthrough for renewable energy. The battery’s ability to absorb excess electricity quickly during peak solar hours and release it back to the grid when needed could help stabilize power networks and make clean energy far more reliable.
