Update:

In the United States, certain Social Security recipients are due to get their latest monthly benefits this week, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) begins the program’s July 2026 payment schedule.

On Thursday, July 2, Social Security benefits are to be distributed to two groups of recipients.

Who receives Social Security on Thursday, July 2?

  • Certain long-term beneficiaries

July’s money is scheduled to be sent out to beneficiaries who began receiving Social Security before May 1997.

  • Dual recipients (Social Security + SSI)

Thursday is also July’s Social Security payment date for beneficiaries who combine the program with Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

A benefit for certain low-income, low-resource individuals, SSI differs from Social Security as it is needs-based. Eligibility for the scheme does not depend on a claimant’s employment history.

In July, SSI benefits - which average $738.13 a month - are issued on Wednesday 1.

Payment brought forward

Normally, the long-term and dual beneficiaries above receive their Social Security on the third of the month. However, July’s payments are being made a day early because Friday 3 is a federal holiday, as part of the U.S.’s Independence Day celebrations.

How much are Social Security payments?

  • Retirement benefits: $2,028.00
  • Disability benefits: $1,493.25
  • Survivor benefits: $1,626.59

Average monthly amount, according to figures shared by the SSA.

When are other Social Security beneficiaries paid in July?

Of the U.S.’s 71 million Social Security recipients, many will be paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in July, depending on their date of birth:

  • Born on 1st-10th of any month: Wednesday, July 8
  • Born on 11th-20th of any month: Wednesday, July 15
  • Born on 21st-31st of any month: Wednesday, July 22

NB: If you claim Social Security based on someone else’s work record, the SSA uses the other person’s birthday.

How does the Social Security Admin make benefits payments?

  • Direct deposit

Social Security beneficiaries can update their bank details using the online “my Social Security” tool.

  • Direct Express

Benefits can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for receiving federal disbursements. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
