California is witnessing a significant wave of store closures as various national chains grapple with financial challenges.
Interest rate increases over the last 12 months have gone a significant way in the Federal Reserve’s target of cutting inflation to 2%. Increasing the cost of borrowing, as high interest rates do, puts pressure on companies to cut back on spending.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, this means stores are closing locations around the US in an effort to keep costs down.
Which stores are closing in California this year?
Macy’s is executing a three-year plan to close 125 locations, including shopping mall stores in California. A rescue deal may happen this year but there are no guarantees of stores remaining open.
Rite Aid, facing bankruptcy, is another brand that will be closing dozens of stores. An October announcement of more than 150 store closures. This includes 38 in California at these addresses:
“With the support of our lenders, we look forward to strengthening our financial foundation, advancing our transformation initiatives and accelerating the execution of our turnaround strategy,” new CEO, Jeff Stein said in astatement.
CVS announced a few years ago that it would close 900 stores by 2022 and 2024 The closures include a recent announcement to shutter another San Francisco locationwhich now has 12 stores in total.
Tuesday Morning, the home goods retailer, is finishing up the process of closing all its stores not just in California but also nationwide. This is a result of the chain going bust last year.
Banana Republic and its parent company, Gap, announced the closure of about 350 stores in 2023. Flagship locations in California’s San Francisco Centre and Embarcadero Center were included in this.
