Storm Watch: Barry Loses Strength in Mexico, New System Brewing in Gulf May Target Florida

Update:

Hurricane season in the US began one month ago, and so far, two tropical storms—but no hurricanes—have formed in the Atlantic. This weekend, Tropical Storm Barry made landfall in northeastern Mexico and quickly lost strength. It is the second named storm to form in the Atlantic this season.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts that between 13 and 19 named storms will form in the region through November, with 6 to 10 expected to strengthen into hurricanes. So far, no storms have made landfall in the US, but meteorologists are closely monitoring a weather system currently active in the Gulf of Mexico.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued an alert on Sunday, June 29, 2025, noting that meteorologists are tracking activity in the Gulf with a 20 percent chance of developing into a tropical or subtropical storm within the next seven days.

Tropical Storm Flossie set to make landfall on Mexico’s Pacific coast

The US National Weather Service’s Hurricane Center is also tracking another storm—Tropical Storm Flossie—which has formed off Mexico’s Pacific coast. Current forecasts do not suggest the storm will impact the United States.

Nevertheless, a Tropical Storm Warning—meaning tropical storm conditions are expected within 36 hours—is in effect from Punta San Telmo to Playa Pérula. Additionally, a Tropical Storm Watch—issued when storm conditions are possible within 48 hours—is active from Zihuatanejo to east of Punta San Telmo, as well as north of Playa Pérula to Cabo Corrientes.

As of now, the storm is located about 155 miles southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, with sustained winds reaching 65 miles per hour. If those winds reach 74 mph, the storm would be upgraded to a hurricane. Find the latest on the NWS website.
