Police have arrested a suspect, a 26-year-old man named Luigi Mangione, in Altoona, Pa as they look for the killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Thompson was fatally shot outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on the morning of Wednesday, December 4. The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. local time, with the victim pronounced dead at a nearby hospital at 7:12 a.m.

The gunman was described by the New York Police Department as wearing a light brown or cream-colored jacket, a black face mask, black and white sneakers and a “very distinctive” gray backpack. Authorities were later able to access surveillance footage showing the suspect’s full face, with the images made public.

Luigi Mangione’s hatred of the health insurance industry

They now hope those efforts have borne fruit, with Mangione taken into custody at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa, about 300 miles from New York City. Law enforcement officials revealed they had received a tip that he had been recognised.

The suspected killer was found with a ghost gun that uses 9mm bullets, a silencer, four fake IDs and writings apparently critical of the health insurance industry, according to authorities.

It is believed Mangione held a grudge against the medical community because of how he believed sick relatives had been treated in the past. Online obituaries show his grandmother died in 2013 and his grandfather four years later.

Who is Luigi Mangione?

In a news conference, police stated Mangione was born and raised in Towson, Maryland, had links to San Francisco and had most recently lived in Honolulu, Hawaii.

A high school valedictorian, he graduated from the private Ivy League institution in Philadelphia with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE), Computer and Information Science in 2020. Mangione also did a Master of Science in Engineering (MSE), Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania, according to his LinkedIn profile, which states he works as a data engineer in California, despite his address.

Although Mangione has not been formally charged, he will now be questioned about Thompson’s killing on December 4.
