Update:

Earlier this month, the national retail chain Target recalled around 26,000 units of baby food, pulling the containers from the shelves. The Food and Drug Administration’s report on the recall points to “elevated levels of lead” in the Good & Gather’s baby Pea, Zucchini, Kale & Thyme Vegetable Puree.

For those who have purchased this product recently, you should be on the lookout for lot numbers: 4167 and 4169; best buy dates: Dec. 7, 2025, and Dec. 9, 2025; and the UPC number: UPC 1 91907-99314 1.

Target will issue a full refund to any customer who has purchased the product.

Are private labels dangerous?

Good & Gather is one of Target’s private labels, offering consumers comparable products to name brands at a lower cost.

The practice is common, think about Costco’s Kirkland Signature, or Safeway Select, or Walmart’s Good Value. In some cases, the manufacturer of the name brand will take other orders from private labels looking to charge less for the same product.

The baby food at the center of this recall was produced by Fruselva USA, based in Miami, Florida. The fact that the baby food was manufactured under a third-party label doesn’t explain how excessive levels of lead were able to enter the product. Name brands see their products recalled, too. Frito-Lay’s Tostitos Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips were recalled in late March.

Which states are affected by the baby food recall?

Very little information has been released by the health authority about the recall and the threat to shoppers and their infants. The short report does say that the products had initially been sent to stores nationwide, with no states specifically mentioned.
