Both South Carolina and Virginia are paying back some of the taxes paid by residents in their 2021 filing.

South Carolina

Taxpayers in the state may be eligible for tax rebates worth up to $800 if their taxes for 2021 had been filed by 17 October, 2022. According to the the South Carolina Department of Revenue, this affects taxpayers who filed their 2021 South Carolina Individual Income Tax return, or SC1040.

The first rebates have already been sent out and will continue through December and those able to receive the rebate will obtain it via mail or direct deposit by the end of the year.

Fortunately for people who think they may have missed out, tax returns filed up to 15 February, 2023 are also eligible but they won’t receive the rebate until March 2023.

To see how much you can receive you can look at your SC1040 form. If there is no amount on line 10, add the totals of lines 21 and 22, and subtract this from line 15. Up to $800 of this will be returned.

Virginia

The Virginia General Assembly gave taxpayers with a liability a rebate of up to $250 for individual filers and up to $500 for joint filers. To receive the rebate taxpayers must have filed by 1 November, 2022, meaning applying now will already be too late.

What is a tax liability?

A tax liability is a tax bill you owe to a state, local or federal government entity, according to Ramsey Solutions.

In the context of this tax relief if your company withholds money from you to pay the IRS, such as if you have filled out a W-4 form, then you are likely able to receive some of this money back from the Virginia government.

You can check your eligibility using the rebate lookup tool though nearly everyone should have received the rebate already. If you haven’t received it, the Virginia government recommends to call them at 804.367.8031. If you filed after 5 September, 2022 then rebates are filed on a first-come-first-served basis.
