Update:

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world. In fact, it is estimated that more than 2.25 billion cups are consumed every day. In Spain alone, more than 80% of adults consume coffee regularly, which is about 4.5kg per person per year with many people considering themselves ‘addicted’ to this drink, claiming that they cannot go a day without it.

This is the case of Korean PK Sanjun, who had been drinking two cups of black coffee every day for ten years, and who decided to ‘give it up’ for a week to find out how his body behaved without caffeine. He told Rocketnews24 that he wanted to share his story, stressing that ‘it has no scientific or medical approach’, that it is only ‘a personal experience’.

Sanjun also made it clear that he did not completely wean himself off caffeine as he did consume iced and jasmine tea during those seven days. However, he did feel himself becoming ‘drowsy’. ‘It wasn’t like I was in a daze, but more like I had a constant feeling of sluggishness,’ he adds.

Coffee withdrawal symptoms?

The Korean native also admits that when it came to falling asleep, he nodded off easily without those two cups of black coffee a day. ‘And there was almost no irritation (...) Of course I would have liked to drink it, but I can say that I didn’t experience any irritating withdrawal symptoms,’ he says.

Sanjun compares the withdrawal that occurs in the process of quitting smoking to saying goodbye to coffee. ‘You feel irritated if you don’t smoke for a few hours. Both coffee and tobacco are classified as addictive, but the addictive properties of one and the other are at completely different levels,’ he tells Rocketnews24. In short, PK Sanjun admits that the week without coffee was ‘groggy and a bit boring, but I was able to fall asleep much easier’.
