Thanksgiving is here, and with it the busiest travel event of the year. Some 80 million Americans are expected to be on the move over the holiday according to AAA. Most of those will be hitting the road and depending on where they are going they could experience some adverse weather requiring more caution and patience while driving.

Those that haven’t hit the road yet could face some travel delays on Thanksgiving Day. A low pressure system has moved in over the eastern portion of the US which will drop rain on states from the Gulf up along the East Coast, causing headaches especially for those along the I-95 corridor and inland. There is the potential for strong thunderstorms in the Southeast.

The rain will turn to snow in the interior regions of the Northeast and in New England. Parts of Maine and New Hampshire could see 6 inches or more of snowfall between Thursday and Friday, creating treacherous driving conditions.

As the low pressure system moves offshore, Artic air will come rushing in behind it. This will provide the conditions for lake effect snow across the Great Lakes region. By Friday areas east and southeast of the Great Lakes will begin to see snow accumulations. This could create slippery road conditions and reduced visibility.

States that will be affected include Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

Meteorologists are warning that some areas could be buried in snow with it being measured in feet with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation per hour. In order to get the specific forecast for your location you can visit http://weather.gov and put in your zip code.
