According to GoBankingRates, the United States Mint produced a series of collectible 25-cent coins in 1976 in honor of the country’s bicentennial. Because these are special edition coins, their value is already higher than usual, but some coins are worth a lot more than others.
Among the most valuable specialty coins was a 1976-S bicentennial silver quarter that sold for nearly $20,000 at an auction a couple of years ago, according to Chronicle Collectibles.
The great value of this tiny coin is related to its coating, as these coins have multiple layers of metal, including nickel, copper and zinc. Some coins are more valuable because their coating contains a layer of silver, which makes up 40% of the coin’s material.

According to GoBankingRates, the U.S. Bicentennial quarters were minted in three different locations: Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, with the latter being the place where the coins were coated in 40% silver.
