Update:

Easter is just a few days away, and those planning to host an egg hunt are encountering higher prices for the coveted easter staple.

Over the last year, the average price for a dozen eggs has surged more than 270 percent, reaching $6.22 in March. However, when comparing prices across the country, one finds wide variations, even at the same retailers. For instance, at Walmart, a dozen White eggs will cost $5.25 in Wooster, Ohio, but closer to $7.20 in Sacramento, California’s capital. Depending on how many eggs you wish to dye and hide, you could see a price tag as high as $30 for four dozen.

Nevertheless, families will be paying more for eggs this Easter, and as a main feature of many celebrations, some are looking for alternatives.

One option is the classic reusable plastic eggs, which can be stored away for use next year. Many retailers will see you 150 plastic eggs for less than the price of three dozen real ones. But that is far from one’s only option.

Getting creative may save you some money this Easter

Additionally, some with an affinity for crafting have made their own eggs out of paper or other recycled materials to save a bit of cash this easter. If dying eggs is out of the question this year because of the skyrocketing cost, making some paper eggs could be a fun alternative for those with some patience to follow the detailed instructions.

Paper mache could also be an option for those looking to create eggs that they could fit prizes into. One could take a small balloon, fill it with candy, coins, or a small trinket, then blow it up with air and cover it in paper mache.

Is Easter a public holiday?

No. Easter Sunday is not one of the federal government’s eleven public holidays. Although Christmas is a public holiday, the fact that Easter always falls on a Sunday means that most public workers aren’t on the clock anyway; this includes the vast majority of US Postal Service workers, who deliver mail on Saturdays but not Sundays. Many US postal service employees who deliver mail on Saturday have Sunday off. Private businesses, including grocery stores, may alter their hours to give those celebrating a chance to be with family, but those decisions are made on a business-by-business basis.
