Update:

The Social Security Administration (SSA) announced that by early summer 2025, it will launch a digital version of the Social Security card. This new feature will allow “my Social Security” account holders to access and view their Social Security number (SSN) online, providing a convenient alternative to the traditional physical card.

This digital access aims to assist individuals who have forgotten their SSN or misplaced their physical card, reducing the need for in-person visits or waiting for a replacement card to arrive by mail.

To utilise this feature, users must create a “my Social Security” account, enabling them to securely view their SSN on their mobile devices.

Acting Commissioner Lee Dudek said that he was “proud” to offer this new digital solution to our account holders. “This enhancement reflects our commitment to providing better service to the public while ensuring that their personal information remains secure. We believe that this modern approach will meet the needs of our constituents in a more efficient manner”, he added.

According to the Social Security Administration, “this digital feature not only streamlines the process for those who need their SSN but also reinforces our dedication to protecting sensitive information. By providing a secure digital option, SSA aims to reduce the risk of lost or stolen cards and enhance the overall user experience.

For those who currently need a replacement Social Security card, the digital version is not yet available. However, the SSA advises that if individuals know their SSN, a physical card may not be necessary. If a replacement is needed, requests can be made online or by phone, with the new card typically arriving by mail within a few business days.
