The ship that OceanGate used in its expedition could not fit the Titan

It’s been a month since the fateful underwater explosion of the Titan, and the media keep finding new evidence that the tragedy could have been avoided. Ignoring the experts, not taking into account the most basic notions of security, and, ultimately, wanting hard cash, it appears OceanGate’s desire to save money is one of the reasons behind the company’s reckless attitude.

Advisors and even employees of the firm implored management to agree to undergo an independent security audit. But there was no way. Stockton Rush, the CEO and one of the passengers who perished in the accident did not recognize the authority or methods of the agencies that issued these certificates. Therefore, he pressed on despite the many indications of danger.

The New York Times has recently revealed a new and worrying episode in this regard. The ship that was hired to carry out the expedition was too small. The ship, named the Polar Prince, was over sixty years old and was contracted because of how cheap it was to rent. The drawback (one of many)... the submersible could not fit on the deck.

But the decision had been made. The Polar Prince would take the crew to the Titanic’s resting sight. What remained was a way to transport the Titan since taking it on board, which was the most advisable option, was not available. So, the decision was made to have the Polar Prince tow the submersible for the three-day trip. This new reporting raises questions about whether or not this way of traveling could have caused damage to the structure of the submersible. However, it is too soon to confirm whether or not this method of transport contributed to the tragic fate of the Titan’s final voyage. The experts on the case have given themselves at least a year and a half to be able to assert with certainty the reason that triggered this sad event.
