Although chilling, the sound of the very moment the Titan imploded, suddenly ending the lives of its five passengers, was recorded by the US military. However, before announcing that the sound was what many in the US Coast Guard assumed it was, authorities wanted to find evidence that could corroborate their suspicion.

After losing communication with the submersible, the military commanders were certain that an implosion had occurred. This was all the more chilling as it seemed hopeless, given the lack of clues. The precision of their hypotheses was possible thanks to a “top secret” device, as described by CNN journalist Oren Liebermann. While the device was not able to help bring the crew to safety, it proved useful in guiding search and rescue efforts in the area.

A network of sensors capable of finding the origin

The collection system was able to capture sounds that were previously dismissed as SOS signals, giving hope to even the most skeptical individuals. However, the information that surfaced from the depths of the sea was a mix of both positive and negative news. The good news was that the deaths were immediate, and the tragic factor was that there was never any chance of the five-member crew being rescued.

Since, sound exceptionally well through liquids, the US military has constructed a network of acoustic sensors that operate in the ocean, which makes detecting implosions relatively easy. This is because the audio is captured with great clarity, ensuring that such a loud noise cannot go unnoticed. Once the auditory data is processed, a series of calculations enable us to trace the origin and epicenter of the sound.

The use of this data was confirmed by the US Coast Guard and Navy. The collaboration between the two forces, led some privy to information about the recording to take seriously the responsibility to not fill the public with false hope. Sadly, while millions around the world kept hoping that the passengers would be saved, the submersible had already imploded, merging with the silent and infinite darkness of the seabed.
