These are the offices that will be closed for Juneteenth 2025
June 19, or Juneteenth, celebrates the end of slavery in the United States and has been a federally-recognized holiday in the U.S. since 2021.

Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19 every year in the United States. The date commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. In 1865, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
The Juneteenth flag symbolizes liberation. The star marks Texas, where the enslaved were freed in Galveston in 1865. The arc is a new horizon, and the red, white & blue colors affirm that the enslaved are American. 64 days to Slavery Remembrance Day. #CountdowntoSRD pic.twitter.com/qqfyrEJLfF

The date has therefore been recognized since 1866, and Texas was the first state to recognize it as a state holiday in 1980. Every other state except South Dakota went on to formally recognize Juneteenth as either a state or ceremonial holiday. But it didn’t become a federal holiday until June 17, 2021 when former President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.
Juneteenth 2025: Which workers have the day off and which offices will be open or closed?
This year, Juneteenth falls on Thursday. Because it is now a federal holiday in the United States, many Americans will have a paid day off, and many government offices will be closed to observe the day.
Expect all non-essential government offices to be closed as well as several public institutions at the local and state levels. It is advised to check with your local government to find out exact closures in your area.
All post offices across the country will be closed on Juneteenth and no mail, whether residential or business, will be delivered that day. The only exception is Priority Mail Express, which is available all year round, even federal holidays.
Honored to have helped raise the Juneteenth Flag in Downtown Chicago, today. How is Juneteenth celebrated?
To celebrate, some states will have parades or festivals with barbecues, picnics, concerts, and church services. Food typically plays an important role in the celebrations.
“Juneteenth continues to be celebrated in cities with Black populations through a series of parades, family reunions, speeches and consuming of specific foods with a red color including barbecue,” the National Park Service said on its website.
Juneteenth celebrations are shrinking — not because they matter less, but because companies and municipalities are pulling funding. Black communities are left to carry the weight. Still we rise. Juneteenth lives on — because we make it live on. https://t.co/sMBnp5Iy3q

Some people may choose to support Black-owned businesses and restaurants or to bring attention to the ongoing racial inequality prevalent throughout the nation.
