Walgreens pharmacy closures: Updated list of locations closing in 2026

Two years ago Walgreens announced that it planned to reduce its footprint in the United States by shuttering 1,200 locations of the roughly 8,600 it had over three years. The move was part of an optimization strategy to re-orient the company as a retail pharmacy and focus growth on its core lines of business.

While that effort continues, it was modified after private equity firm Sycamore Partners acquired the pharmacy store chain in August 2025 and took the company private. The number of store closures projected for 2026 has dropped from 700 to less than 100.

The new owners are sticking with the plan to close stores that are underperforming or becoming too costly to run due to issues with theft and safety. Additionally, those stores whose leases are expiring or in order to consolidate distribution centers are other reasons cited for locations targeted for closure.

Walgreens hasn’t posted a full list of the locations that it plans to close this year, but Inc. has compiled a list of 15 that already have shuttered in 2026 in eleven states. They are as follows:

• 1805 Greens Road, Houston, TX 77032
• 1301 S Joyce Street, Suite D3, Arlington, VA 22202

For those who are affected by the store closures above or those that may come in the future and worried about having their prescriptions filled, Walgreens assures its customers that “they’re ready to help you,” at any location across the country. Every store has access to customers’ prescriptions, records and insurance so they will have no problem getting their prescriptions filled at another Walgreens location which they can find on the company’s website.
