Update:

More than seven million people in the U.S. are set to get a benefits check from the Social Security Administration (SAA) today, in what is the opening payment on the agency’s May 2025 distribution schedule.

Who will be receiving a check today, May 1?

On Thursday, May 1, the SSA is scheduled to send out the latest monthly check to beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

SSI payments are always made on the first of each month, unless that day falls on a weekend or holiday.

Who is eligible for SSI checks in the U.S.?

A scheme that currently has 7.4 million beneficiaries nationwide, SSI is aimed at people who have little to no income or resources, and are over-65 or have a disability.

Unlike Social Security programs such as retirement benefits, survivor pay and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), eligibility for SSI does not depend on recipients’ payment of Social Security taxes. It is a needs-based, rather than contribution-based, program.

How much do SSI beneficiaries receive each month?

Per the latest figures published by the SSA, SSI beneficiaries are paid $715.58 a month on average.

The SSA says the maximum SSI check available to an individual claimant is $967. Eligible couples can get up to $1,450 per month.

The agency also notes that some SSI beneficiaries may receive a supplementary payment from their state, depending on where they live. Check out which states offer this additional money on the SSA website.

When are other Social Security checks paid in May 2025?

Take a look at the SSA’s full schedule of payments for 2025 in this online pdf published by the agency.

Most recipients of retirement, survivor and SSDI benefits will be issued their check on one of three Wednesdays in May, depending on their date of birth:

Wednesday payment dates in full: May 2025

Wednesday, May 14: Beneficiaries born on 1st to 10th
Wednesday, May 21: Beneficiaries born on 11th to 20th
Wednesday, May 28: Beneficiaries born on 21st to 31st

The three-Wednesdays schedule does not apply to any Social Security beneficiaries who began receiving retirement, survivor or SSDI pay before May 1997.

These long-term recipients are due to get their money tomorrow - Friday, May 2 - regardless of each individual’s date of birth.

This group of beneficiaries is usually paid a day later than this, but May’s check is to be issued 24 hours early as the third falls on a Saturday.

What happens if you claim both SSI and regular Social Security?

If you receive both SSI and retirement/SSDI/survivor benefits, you are scheduled to be paid the former today and the latter tomorrow.
