They installed solar panels at home and were surprised by the rising electricity bills: “We weren’t crazy”
The family expected to recoup their investment in less than a decade, but the bills started to skyrocket. The mystery was solved in an unexpected way.

What was supposed to be an investment in sustainability and energy savings turned into a bureaucratic and financial nightmare for a Polish family that installed solar panels on their single-family home five years ago. Despite sunny days and what appeared to be excellent energy production, their electricity bills started climbing with no logical explanation.
The case was shared on an online solar panel forum. During the first few years, the photovoltaic system worked flawlessly. The inverter app showed consistently high energy production, and the family believed their investment of more than 33,000 Polish zloty, about $7,500, would pay for itself in less than ten years. Over time, however, their utility bills began showing steadily increasing electricity consumption, even though the family had not changed its habits or added new appliances.
The situation became even more concerning when the family switched from semiannual billing to billing every two months in hopes of gaining a clearer picture of their energy use. That was when they discovered they had been charged 2,900 zloty, or more than $650, over just a four-month period. The amount exceeded what they had paid in some entire previous years.
“We were stunned. It made no sense. Energy production was still high, and nothing had changed in the house,” the homeowner explained.
Faced with the unexplained charges, the family began making repeated calls to both the electric company and the grid operator. Neither could provide a convincing explanation for the excessive consumption readings.
“It was like talking to a wall. Nobody knew anything, and everyone kept passing the responsibility to someone else,” the homeowner said.
Texas AG @KenPaxtonTX has opened an investigation into multiple solar panel companies in Texas for allegedly engaging in fraudulent and deceptive practices.

Testing at an independent laboratory
The breakthrough came from an unexpected source. An acquaintance who was not connected to either company suggested having the electric meter tested by an independent laboratory. Although the idea seemed risky, the family decided to move forward with it.
They formally requested that the utility inspect the meter, though not without pressure from the company.
“They kept reminding us that if the meter turned out to be working properly, we would have to pay about [$75] for the test,” the homeowner recalled.
Despite the financial risk, the family decided to proceed. Independent technicians came to the house, removed the suspicious meter, and installed a new one. The results were immediate and revealing.
Their next two-month bill came to just 155 zloty, or roughly $35. Of that amount, only about $19 reflected actual electricity usage. The remainder consisted of fixed service and grid fees. The dramatic difference became the first clear sign that the real problem had been a defective meter.
Utility bills recalculated
One week later, the family received official confirmation. The laboratory sent a certified report stating that the removed meter was indeed faulty. That document allowed the family to file claims seeking corrections to their previous bills and reimbursement for the overpayments.
The utility company agreed to recalculate the bills using the readings from the newly installed meter as a reference point for estimating actual electricity consumption during earlier billing periods.
“It was a long fight, but it was worth it. Now we know we weren’t crazy, and that the system can fail,” the family said after finally resolving the false and inflated electricity consumption readings they had experienced despite installing solar panels.
