As of 2024, Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and owner of Tesla, X, and SpaceX, has amassed a net worth of $440 billion, reported Forbes.

Though a household name before the 2024 election, his public persona became much more well-known after he endorsed President-elect Donald Trump and injected millions of his wealth into the GOP candidate’s campaign.

One way to better understand the scale of Musk’s wealth is to place it in the context of what he could buy if he were to liquidate his assets, ignoring that if he made such a move, there would be negative effects on said assets. In the rare case that Musk was to begin selling off his stocks in his companies, the price would begin to fall, as there would be a greater number available for sale. When there is an increase in supply and demand remains constant, prices tend to fall.

Musk’s net worth after purchasing the NFL, MLB, and NBA

Looking at the NFL, the total value of all teams as of August 2024, according to Forbes, stood around $181.7 billion. The Dallas Cowboys, worth an estimated $10.7 billion, are the most valuable team on the list, followed by the Los Angeles Rams ($7.6 billion), and the New England Patriots ($7.4 billion).

Musk could buy every team in the NFL, still have a net worth around $219 billion, and keep his position as the wealthiest person in the world.

Leaving him plenty of cash to head into the baseball market.

Adding all Major League Baseball teams to Musk’s ownership would cost him around $72.18 billion, bringing his net worth down to $146.8 billion. The most expensive teams to purchase would be the New York Yankees ($7.55 billion), the Los Angeles Dodgers ($5.45 billion), and the Boston Red Sox ($4.50 billion).

With half of his wealth still standing, he could move into the basketball market and purchase every NBA team, both the men’s and women’s leagues, for $136.5 billion, leaving him with around $10.3 billion still to play with. The top three teams in the area represent 17 percent of the men’s league.
