Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has resigned from his position, marking the end of his nine-year tenure as the country’s leader. The decision comes amid mounting pressure from within his own Liberal Party and a series of challenges that have eroded his political standing.

While all governments must deal with difficult battles, the straw that broke the camels back seems to be the imminent eleciton of Donald Trump as U.S. president and what this means for Canadians.

Too many battles for Trudeau to manage

The proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports by the upcoming U.S. government caused a great deal of panic in the government with no resolution to deal with the issue. This looming trade conflict has created a rift within the Liberal Party, with key members disagreeing on how to approach the situation.

Trudeau’s handling of the imminent issue resulted in the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland in mid-December. Freeland’s departure, citing differences with Trudeau on handling Trump’s presidency and tariff proposals, exposed deep-seated disagreements within the party’s leadership.

Trudeau’s decision to step down is also influenced by the Liberal Party’s declining popularity. Recent polls show the party trailing significantly behind the opposition Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre. With a general election mandated to occur by October, Trudeau’s resignation appears to be a strategic move to give his party a chance to regroup under new leadership.

The pressure on Trudeau intensified as more than 20 Liberal members of parliament publicly called for his departure. This internal revolt, coupled with the resignation of key cabinet members and plummeting approval ratings, left Trudeau with little choice but to step down.

Trudeau’s resignation leaves the Liberal Party at a crossroads. The party must now select an interim leader and prepare for a potential early election
