Update:

Customers of the financial services company USAA may be eligible for a share of a seven-figure payout after the firm was hit with a class-action lawsuit over a data breach.

How much money has USAA agreed to pay?

USAA, a company chiefly used by military members, veterans and their families, is set to stump up a total of $3.25 million after agreeing to settle the lawsuit in December.

The suit alleged that USAA failed to properly protect its customers from a May 2021 data breach that compromised users’ personal information.

Although USAA denies the allegations, the company settled the case “to avoid the uncertainty and risk of further litigation”, according to court documents.

How you can claim your share of the USAA settlement

According to information provided on the class-action settlement’s website, some 22,600 USAA customers are estimated to be eligible for a share of the money.

Per AL.com’s Leada Gore, USAA customers who qualify for a share of the $3.25m settlement should have received a mail/email notification from the company, containing a claimant ID number and a confirmation code.

To check your eligibility for the settlement, you can call the toll-free telephone number 1-888-464-4086.

To claim your share of the settlement, you need to submit a settlement payment election form online, at this address, before 11:59 p.m. ET on April 7, 2025. You can also send the form by mail to: Angeion Group LLC, 1650 Arch Street, Suite 2210, Philadelphia, PA 19103. It must be postmarked April 7, 2025 or earlier.

By accepting your share, the settlement website says, you renounce your right to “sue, continue to sue, or be part of any other lawsuit” relating to the USAA data breach.

How much money will each USAA customer receive and when?

It remains unclear how much each eligible USAA customer will receive, as the exact number of claimants is yet to be confirmed.

It should also be noted that costs such as taxes and legal fees must first be deducted from the $3.25m settlement amount.

The settlement must be approved at a final hearing held on May 21, 2025. Before it can then be paid out, any appeals processes must also be completed, the settlement website explains.

“It can sometimes take a year or more for the appellate process to conclude,” the website warns, adding: “Please be patient.”

How you can exclude yourself or object to the settlement

You can exclude yourself from the settlement by sending a request for exclusion to the postal address listed above. You’ll find details on what information you need to include in your request on the USAA settlement website.

You also have the option of telling the court that you object to the settlement, by filing a written objection. Find out more about how to submit an objection.

The deadline to file an exclusion request or an objection is also April 7, 2025.
