Every year millions of Americans take to the road to go visit family for Thanksgiving or take advantage of the holiday to go to warmer climes before old man winter arrives. This year nearly 80 million travelers will be on the move according to AAA.

“Thanksgiving is the busiest holiday for travel, and this year we’re expecting to set new records across the board,” said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel. “AAA continues to see travel demand soar post-pandemic.”

AAA projects that 71.7 million Americans are expected to hit the road over Thanksgiving who may have to contend with some chilly weather as a blast of wintry weather moves across the United States this week. The low front will cause temperatures to plunge across much of the nation.

As well snow will follow on the tail end. The upper Plains and upper Midwest are forecast to see snow on Wednesday and the Ohio River Valley is predicted to get its first snowfall of the season on Thursday.

Those who aren’t traveling to be with family will be going to warmer destinations according to AAA’s Aixa Diaz. Florida tops the list with southern California, Hawaii and Las Vegas. Hertz informed AAA that the highest car rental demand for the Thanksgiving holiday is being seen in Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Oahu, Orlando, and Phoenix.

If traveling on Tuesday or Wednesday, get going in the morning, those afternoons will be the worst time. Thursday will be the best day to hit the road or take a flight as there is less traffic and the tickets are cheaper. If catching a flight AAA recommends getting to the airport at least 2 hours ahead of your flight’s departure.

Fortunately for those who are driving to their holiday destination, gas is cheaper this year. The national average is expected to be less than $3 by Thanksgiving, the first time since 2021.
