Tropical Storm Chantal path tracker: Here’s when it will make landfall and the states that will be impacted
The National Hurricane Center has issued warnings as the storm strengthens off the US’ east coast, with flash flooding possible in some areas this weekend.

The southeast of the United States is bracing itself for the impact of Tropical Storm Chantal, which is making its way towards South Carolina.
The National Hurricane Center has officially upgraded what was previously known as ‘Tropical Depression 3’ as a result of the strengthening over warm waters in the Gulf Stream, approximately 150 miles southeast of Charleston, South Carolina.
Which states will be affected by tropical storm Chantal and when?
Tropical Storm Warnings have been put in place for South Carolina’s beaches north of Santee River and as far as Surf City in North Carolina, with winds with gusts of up to 50mph expected in those areas from Saturday evening through Sunday morning.
However, meteorologists believe some gusts could become even stronger, approaching hurricane strength (Category 1 hurricanes have wind speeds of between 74 and 95mph).
The Carolinas will bear the brunt of Tropical Storm Chantal, although heavy rain and thunderstorms are also expected along the east coast of Florida. Nevertheless, the Sunshine State will not be seriously impacted.
Chantal after-effects, including flash flooding
The storm will weaken as it moves inland, although the after-effects are likely to be felt in the form of blustery, wet conditions into the start of the week.
In particular, heavy rain has been forecast for the coastal plains in the Carolinas. Between two and six inches of rain is expected to fall in some parts, while flash flooding could hit the worst affected areas.
