A man drove a pickup truck at high speed into a crowd during New Year’s Eve celebrations on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing 10 people. He then opened fire on police officers and hit two of them.

Dozens of others were injured by the vehicle in the attack, while the two New Orleans Police officers who were shot are in stable condition.

Police officials say the driver deliberately rammed into the crowd, most of whom were local residents and not tourists.

FBI takes lead in Bourbon Street attack investigation

The FBI, which is taking over the investigation, said in a statement the driver of the pickup has been confirmed dead.

“This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens of others,” according to the FBI.

“The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism.”

FBI special agent Alethea Duncan said they have found “improvised explosive devices” at the site.

The authorities have not provided information on the possible motive of the attack.

The tragic incident in the French Quarter took place hours before the Sugar Bowl college football game set to be hosted by the city. The annual game attracts fans from all over the country, with the University of Georgia scheduled to go up against Notre Dame.

Officials are warning residents to stay clear of the area where the attack took place as they continue their investigation.
