In November 2016, Donald Trump was elected the 45th President of the United States, after winning the general election over Hillary Clinton. While the Democratic candidate took the popular vote with 65.8 million votes, compared to Trump’s 62.9 million, the Republican candidate won in a number of key states, which earned him a greater number of votes in the Electoral College.

For a candidate to become president of the country, he or she must obtain the minimum majority of electoral votes, that is, 270. Clinton obtained 227 electoral votes, while Trump obtained 307. This is how the Republican businessman became president of the United States in 2016.

However, the Democrats managed to regain the White House in 2020 with 306 electoral votes for the current president, Joe Biden, compared to Trump's 232. With this, the former vice president of the Barack Obama Administration became the 46th president of the United States.

According to the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, “No person shall be elected to the office of President more than twice.” Since the law does not stipulate that the two terms must be held consecutively, in an attempt to regain the White House and secure a second and final term, Donald Trump chose to run for president again.

The Republican is currently in a tight race with Vice President Kamala Harris, who assumed the Democratic Party nomination after Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Harris is seeking to become the first female president of the United States.

If Trump defeats Harris and returns to power, he would also be making history by becoming only the second president of the United States to regain the presidency after losing re-election. The first to do so was Grover Cleveland, who regained the White House in 1892 after losing re-election to Benjamin Harrison in 1888. If so, Donald Trump would take the title of the 47th president of the United States.
