The 2020 Presidential Election saw the Democrats regain control of the White House, winning the popular vote for a fourth consecutive election.
Four years ago, both Joe Biden and Donald Trump made history in the 2020 Presidential Election.
The two candidates both received more votes than any nominee had previously received. It was a testament to the highly-charged nature of the 2020 election campaigns, and the uniqueness of Trump as a political candidate. Biden won out in the all-important electoral college with 306-232 victory to claim the White House.
The 46th president also scored a huge victory in the popular vote. Biden received 81.2 million votes, 7 million more than the 74.2 million who backed Trump.
How did each state vote in the 2020 Presidential Election?
Much of Biden’s electoral success in 2020 can be attributed to his ability to reclaim the traditionally Democrat-leaning ‘Rust Belt’ states in the northeast, recapturing Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin they switched to Trump in the 2016 election.
In addition to those three key swing states, Biden also flipped the states of Arizona and Georgia. He even gained the 2nd congressional district in Nevada, where the state’s electoral college votes are divided into districts.

Which presidents lost the popular vote?
Trump failed to win re-election in 2020 and only narrowly took the White House in 2016, managing a series of narrow wins in key states to pip Hilary Clinton to the post.
In doing so, Trump became just the fifth American president to win the election while also losing the popular vote. Clinton picked up more than 2 million votes more than Trump in 2016 but still lost the electoral college.

The other presidents to have lost the popular vote are George W. Bush (2000), Benjamin Harrison (1888), Rutherford B. Hayes (1876) and John Quincy Adams (1824).
Three of those five ran again for the presidency in the following election and lost both the popular vote and the electoral college. No president have ever won two terms in the White House without winning the popular vote at least once. Could Donald Trump become the first?
