Trump Inauguration
Will the Obamas attend Donald Trump’s inauguration?
Amid rumors that their relationship is on the rocks, will Barack and Michelle be seen together at the Capitol on Monday?

Former presidents and world leaders will be among the dignitaries attending Donald Trump’s inauguration in Washington DC on Monday.
Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and outgoing president Joe Biden have all received invitations which have been accepted but not all of them will be accompanied by their spouses.
Former first lady Michelle Obama didn’t join her husband Barack at the funeral for former US president Jimmy Carter last week. The reason given was a “scheduling conflict”. Michelle was on vacation in Hawaii, a spokesman explained, before passing on a note of condolence to the Carter family on her behalf.
Barack did attend - on his own, and despite having a frosty relationship with Trump, he did sit next to the incoming president and the pair were seen chatting amiably and even laughing and joking together before the service.
Why Michelle Obama won’t see Trump sworn in
Barack has accepted an invitation to attend Trump’s inauguration at the Capitol on Monday but Michelle has reportedly declined. No reason has been given and now back from vacation, she cannot use scheduling conflicts as an excuse. Some commentators suggest Michelle declined the invitation simply because she cannot stand the thought of being in the same room as Trump.
“There’s no overstating her feelings about Trump. She’s not one to plaster on a pleasant face and pretend for protocol’s sake,” a source told PEOPLE.
The 61-year-old mother of two has reportedly “checked out” of political life and is fed up pretending everything is hunky dory with her husband amid rumors that their marriage in in trouble.
Like any couple, Obama and Michelle have had their share of ups and downs - as the latter freely admits. “There were 10 years where I couldn’t stand my husband,” she is quoted as saying in 2022.
Barack and Michelle met while working at the same law firm in the summer of 1989 and have been together ever since. They married on October 1992 and have two children, Sasha and Malia.
Michelle isn’t the only invitee who won’t be attending Trump’s inauguration. Former Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro hoped to be there but a travel ban impedes him from leaving the country.
