A tsunami alert was issued today in Chile following a 7.5-magnitude earthquake near Puerto Williams, located in the far south of the country. According to official information from SHOA (Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy), the event could cause significant impact in various areas of the Antarctic and Magallanes territory over the coming hours.

Tsunami Wave Arrival Timeline for Chile

Tsunami waves ranging from 1 to 3 meters above tide level are possible along some coasts of Chile,” states a report from the USGS (United States Geological Survey). The agency also warns of possible sea level rises of 0.3 to 1 meter along parts of the Antarctic coastline.

The SHOA has released a detailed schedule for the expected arrival of tsunami waves in affected areas:

  • Antarctic Base Prat: 10:35 AM continental time (11:35 AM local time)
  • Antarctic Base O’Higgins: 11:00 AM continental time (12:00 PM local time)
  • Caleta Meteoro: 12:49 PM continental time (1:49 PM local time)
  • Puerto Williams: 1:50 PM continental time (2:50 PM local time)
  • Puerto Edén: 8:07 PM continental time (9:07 PM local time)
