US states with highest number of construction jobs

Jobs within the construction industry are in high demand in the United States for Americans, foreigners and immigrants with an unregulated immigration status.

According to the Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), released in April of last year, the average annual salary of a construction worker in the US is $46,350, while the national average hourly wage is $22.29.

However, certain states in the country have higher salaries for these workers. Another factor to consider if you are looking for work in this sector is the level of employment, which could increase your chances of finding a position.

The states with the most construction jobs

According to BLS data, the states with the highest level of employment for construction workers are Texas, California, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania.

In the case of Texas and Florida, the average salary is below the national one for this field: $18.08 and $18.12 per hour, respectively. On the other hand, in California, New York and Pennsylvania, the hourly wage is higher: $27.03, $28.50 and $24.11.

Other states with high levels employment for construction workers are: Arizona, Washington, Illinois, Minnesota, Georgia, Tennessee, Michigan, Ohio and North Carolina.

States with the highest salaries for construction workers

According to data reported by the BLS, the states where construction workers are paid the most are the following:

  • Hawaii
  • Illinois
  • New Jersey
  • Massachusetts
  • New York

In the case of Hawaii, the average hourly wage is $32.04, while the average annual wage is $66,650. In Illinois and New Jersey, the average salary is $31.53 per hour and $65,590 per year. In Massachusetts, the average salary is $31.22 per hour and $64,940 per year. Finally, in New York the average hourly wage for a construction worker is $28.50 and $59,280 per year.

Construction sectors with the highest level of employment and salaries

The industries with the highest levels of employment for construction workers are:

  • Specialized commercial contractors
  • Construction of residential buildings
  • Construction of public service systems
  • Construction of non-residential buildings
  • Foundation, structural and building exterior contractors

The industries that pay construction workers the best are: transportation of natural gas through pipelines, generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy, support services, general medical and surgical hospitals and railway transport.
