Venezuela Elections 2024: How many ballots will I receive to vote and what are they like?
On Sunday, July 28, presidential elections will be held in Venezuela. Here are the documents you need to bring to vote.
Venezuela is getting ready for elections scheduled for this Sunday, July 28. Public sentiments may be moving away from Chavismo and President Nicolás Maduro who took over after the death of Hugo Chavez in 2011. Apart from Maduro, the presidential candidates are Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, Luis Martinez, Antonio Ecarri, Jose Brito, Daniel Ceballos, Claudio Fermin, Javier Bertucci, Benjamin Rausseo, and Enrique Marquez.
Some candidates will appear on the ballot more than others, and the number depends on the number of political organizations that endorse their candidacy. This format has led to some criticism, as it is seen as confusing and favoring candidates with greater political power.
Venezuela Elections 2024: The ballot
According to the official ballot shared by the National Electoral Council of Venezuela (CNE), voters will be able to choose between 10 candidates. The person elected will rule for a 6-year term that will begin on January 10, 2025.
President Nicolás Maduro appears on the ballot 13 times, as this is the number of political organizations that support his candidacy. On the other hand, the candidate of the majority opposition, Edmundo González Urrutia, appears in only three boxes. This is how the ballot is distributed:
Venezuela Elections 2024: Voting times and what documents are needed
Upon arriving at their voting center, citizens must identify themselves and present their ID cards, whether current or expired. To identify your voting center, you can text 2637 with your ID card number or use the CNE website. Voting machines will be used, and to cast your ballot you must choose the candidate you wish to support and hit the “vote” button. A receipt will be printed; it must be folded up and deposited into the corresponding box set up at the polling location.
Voting centers will open at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday and close at 6:00 pm (local time). However, the CNE has confirmed that those who arrive to the polling station by 6:00 pm will be allowed to cast their ballot.
