Vivienne Westwood dies: Who was she and what was the cause of death?

British fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood died peacefully at home in South London at 81. The style icon and activist was surrounded by her family.

Iconic British fashion designer who came to prominence in the 1970s with her iconoclastic style Dame Vivienne Westwood died on Thursday. The godmother of punk passed “peacefully and surrounded by her family, in Clapham, South London,” according to an official statement released by her company that bears her name.

There has been no mention of what the 81-year-old’s cause of death was. However, her creative partner and husband Andreas Kronthaler said that she had been working until the end.

“I will continue with Vivienne in my heart. We have been working until the end and she has given me plenty of things to get on with,” he said. “Thank you darling.”

The designer who brought new wave and punk fashion into the mainstream was given her honorary royal title of “Dame” in 2006 for her service to fashion.

Westwood was also an activist and supporter of hundreds of campaigns, causes, grassroot charities and NGOs who brought her activism to the catwalk. She launched her own Climate Revolution in 2012. She has been an ambassador for Greenpeace and created their official “Save The Arctic” logo in 2013.

In the official statement from her company was included the following from the late icon.

“Tao spiritual system. There was never more need for the Tao today.

“Tao gives you a feeling that you belong to the cosmos and gives purpose to your life; it gives you such a sense of identity and strength to know you’re living the life you can live and therefore ought to be living: make full use of your character and full use of your life on earth.”

“The world needs people like Vivienne to make a change for the better,” the post added.
