Walmart confirms its Independence Day hours in the U.S.: What you should know before you head out

Every year, Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4. In 2026, the nation will mark the 250th anniversary of its independence, with major parades, festivals, and celebrations expected across the country.

Because Independence Day is a federal holiday, many government offices and institutions will be closed. But what about Walmart? Here’s what you need to know.

Walmart hours for July 4, 2026

July 4 is one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and the 2026 celebrations are expected to be even bigger as the country commemorates its 250th anniversary. Families gather for barbecues, cookouts, and other festivities before ending the day with fireworks displays.

If you’re planning a celebration or family gathering, it’s a good idea to know which stores and supermarkets will be open.

Walmart has confirmed that its stores will be open nationwide on July 4. Most locations will operate during their regular business hours, typically from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. However, store hours may vary by location, so customers are encouraged to check with their local Walmart before heading out.

What’s open and closed on July 4 in the United States?

Under federal law, government offices close on official federal holidays, including Independence Day, giving federal employees the day off. Schools, post offices, libraries, the stock market, and banks also typically close.

However, these closures do not always occur on July 4 itself because the holiday may be observed on a different day. When July 4 falls on a Saturday, federal agencies and many other institutions observe the holiday on the preceding Friday. When it falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on the following Monday.

That is the case in 2026. Since July 4 falls on a Saturday, federal government offices, schools, post offices, the stock market, and banks will be closed on Friday, July 3.

Meanwhile, most supermarkets, retail stores, restaurants, and pharmacies are expected to remain open on both July 3 and July 4, although some businesses may operate with reduced hours or close earlier than usual. Among the major retailers, Costco has confirmed that it will be closed on July 4, as the holiday is included in the company’s annual holiday closure schedule.
