Costco to close all U.S. stores on July 4: Here’s why the warehouse chain is shutting down for 24 hours
After closing on May 25 for Memorial Day, Costco will once again shut down all of its U.S. locations on Saturday, July 4. The warehouse retailer will be closed in observance of Independence Day, one of the nation’s most important federal holidays.
Unlike many of its competitors, Costco observes more holidays throughout the year than most major retailers. Following the Independence Day closure, all Costco locations are scheduled to reopen on Sunday, July 5. Additional holiday closures are also planned throughout 2026.

What is open and closed on July 4 in the United States?
Under federal law, government offices close on federal holidays, including Independence Day, and federal employees receive the day off. Schools, post offices, libraries, stock markets, and banks also typically close.
However, these closures do not always occur on July 4 itself because the holiday may be observed on a different day when it falls on a weekend. If July 4 falls on a Saturday, federal agencies and many other institutions observe the holiday on the preceding Friday. If it falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on the following Monday.
That is the case in 2026. Since July 4 falls on a Saturday, federal government offices, schools, post offices, stock markets, and banks will be closed on Friday, July 3. Most grocery stores, retailers, restaurants, and pharmacies are expected to remain open on both July 3 and July 4, while Costco will close only on July 4.
Costco’s remaining holiday closures in 2026
Costco closes on seven holidays each year. The retailer is closed on New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, which is not an official federal holiday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
After the July 4 closure, Costco will also be closed on the following dates in 2026:
- Labor Day (first Monday in September): September 7, 2026
- Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November): November 26, 2026
- Christmas Day: December 25, 2026
