Watch out for the winter storm: These are the states that will be hit hardest by the snow on Saturday and Sunday

Winter Storm Cora walloped the South with snow and ice from Texas to the East Coast. While the center of the storm has moved off the coast it isn’t done causing headaches for travelers and joy for kids to play in a winter wonderland.

Significant snowfall is forecast to affect areas from the southern Appalachians to the Northeast through Saturday and into Sunday in some areas.

Areas that will receive snow and ice on Saturday and Sunday

Thursday through Friday saw up to a foot or more of snow from the Texas panhandle through central Arkansas and half afoot as far east as northern Georgia and up into Kansas and Missouri according to preliminary reports. South of the main snow band and in its wake in some areas there was measurable ice accumulation. The wintry weather mix will continue to make travel conditions treacherous on Saturday due to unusually cold temperatures.

Heavy snow and ice will continue to affect the south into Saturday, especially in the morning. As much as five more inches of snow is predicted for the southern Appalachians and southern Virginia according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Significant snowfall is forecast for Ohio into Saturday.

Meteorologists are also expecting through Saturday morning an additional four-tenths of an inch of ice accumulation from northern Georgia through parts of the Carolinas.

The Mid-Atlantic and Northeast are forecast to experience wintry weather through Saturday but the amounts are expected to be less than 3 inches in most areas. Snowfall could linger along the Eastern Seaboard and the Appalachians. Travel is expected to remain challenging in the days to come even as temperatures begin to rise above freezing.
