What are the cities with tornado risk today July 16 in Illinois?
A line of destructive storms moved through Illinois on Monday night, bringing tornado risk to several cities in the northern part of the state.
People in Illinois are waking up on Tuesday morning hoping for some positive news regarding recent storms affecting the area. Few have been unscathed on Monday night and early Tuesday morning, feeling the impact as the Chicago metropolitan area experienced multiple tornadoes along the storm line.
The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed a tornado near Sugar Grove, about 46 miles west of Chicago, while there was another in Oswego. Though Cook County, which includes Chicago, was declared “tornado warning free” by late Monday, the area still faced significant damage from high winds.
Storms clearing Illinois from Tuesday
The National Weather Service wrote that, “Thunderstorms are expected to evolve into one or more bow echoes from Iowa into northern Illinois this evening [Monday], with the potential to produce swaths of significant severe gusts up to 75-90 mph and several tornadoes with embedded circulations. The storms will spread into northwest Indiana and southwest Lower Michigan later tonight.” Despite the damage that has been left behind, the good news is that weather centers are reporting that things are quietening down in the region from Tuesday, with a cool front blowing through.
As the storm moved out of Illinois, it continued to pose a severe threat to northwest Indiana. Tornado warnings were issued, with dangerous flying debris and potential damage to structures and vehicles.
Residents in these areas should remain vigilant and prepared for severe weather conditions as the situation continues to develop. Keep up to date with all the latest from the National Weather Service.
