Update:

Two of the world’s largest technology companies, Apple and Meta (the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), compete directly in the virtual reality headsets market.

The specs

When comparing the two goods, price alone might be a deciding factor. The Apple Vision Pro starts at $3,499, while Meta’s Quest 3S VR has a much lower price tag starting at $299. Meta does offer a more powerful headset, the Meta Quest 3, which retails for $499, and the Meta Quest Pro, which starts at $999. All of these options, including Apple’s all have a similar battery life (2-2.5 hours).

Mark Zuckerberg defends his lineup

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, released a video in February after trying out Apple’s product. As expected, he said that the Quest 3 was a superior product overall. Citing comfort and the larger display, Zuckerberg said that Apple’s product’s only major advantage is the display resolution. While the Quest 3S features an 1832x1920-pixel display in each eye, Apple’s option contains a total of 23 million pixels. The Quest 3 includes a 2,064 x 2,208-pixel display.

Now that the 3S will soon come along, it will be interesting to see if Zuckerberg still stands by his being the better product.

Apple’s product is geared toward its consumer base, which can easily integrate the headset into its suite of Apple tools. “Apple Vision Pro can transform any room into your own personal theater,” says Apple, promising to create an extremely immersive experience when watching shows and movies or playing games. On the other hand, the Meta option is a more basic product that still incorporates controllers, whereas Apple allows the wearer to make selections with their eyes. However, Zuckerberg noted that the controllers might have an advantage over Apple’s advanced retinal technology for gaming.
