Geographic income and wealth inequality has increased in the United States over the past few decades. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, this means that the difference in incomes between richer and poorer places has grown.

This rise in geographic inequality implies that economic opportunities are becoming more uneven nationwide. The growing disparity in available options for economic advancement poses a risk of diminishing the chances of households to relocate to better areas.

Top ZIP codes in poorer states earn half of richer ones

GOBankingRates recently conducted a study on the most affluent ZIP codes in each state in the country. When you look at the ZIP codes included in this list, you can see that some median household incomes exceed $250,000 annually, which is more than four times higher than the national average.

This maximum income bracket of more than $250,000 a year appears in the expected big cities in the states of California, Florida, and New York. However, the richest ZIP codes for other states come up to less than half or only a little more than half the maximum income bracket reached by states or cities with more money.

The richest ZIP code in Mississippi, for example, has a median household income of $114,117. This state has been named the poorest state in the country. Louisiana, which also ranks among the states with high poverty levels, has its richest ZIP code earning $127,543 per year.

Here are the top-earning ZIP codes per state, according to GOBankingRates.
