The British royal family has been rocked by health scares with both King Charles III and the Princess of Wales both relieved of their public duties as they deal with their respective ailments.

Both are recovering from surgery. The Princess of Wales, formerly Kate Middleton, was admitted to a private hospital in London in mid-January for an abdominal operation. She has not been seen in public since Christmas Day when she accompanied Prince William and their three children (Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis) and other royals for their annual walk and service at St Mary Magdalene in Paddington.

The procedure was performed at the London Clinic, Devonshire Place on 17 January and while Kensington Palace have not released any further details, the princess remained in hospital to recover post-op for a couple of weeks before being discharged on 29 January. No further details of the operation have been disclosed although her office has said that the princess’ condition is not cancer-related.

She is believed to be now convalescing at home in Windsor and will remain away from official royal engagements until after Easter which means the soonest that Kate might return to public duties would be early to mid-April. Prince William meanwhile, remains active in the Royal Diary, despite pulling out of a Thanksgiving service last week. On Friday, the Prince of Wales visited Wrexham to celebrate St. David’s Day.

While there has been a great deal of speculation about the princess’ health, a Palace spokesperson explained that she is doing well with her recovery but would not elaborate any further following Her Royal Highness’ wishes for privacy. “We were very clear from the outset that the Princess of Wales was out until after Easter and Kensington Palace would only be providing updates when there is significant new information to share”.

A Palace statement released not long after the operation had been performed, stated, “The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private”.
