What is the most popular grocery store in every state?

There are a range of supermarkets in the US from nationwide to regional. But which ones do Americans visit the most to buy groceries in each state?

Buying groceries is an essential activity to keep food on the table. There is plenty of choice in the United States to stock your fridge and pantry.

Supermarkets range from nationwide to regional chains. But which ones get the most foot traffic from Americans shopping for groceries in each state? Here’s a look.

What is the most popular grocery store in every state?

According to a survey by Wisevoter Albertsons draws the most customers in nine states. These include its home state of Idaho along with Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Two of the supermarket’s subsidiaries are also the number one stop for groceries in other states. Acme Markets operates in six states but is at the top of the list in Delaware. Jewel-Osco is a regional supermarket chain in the Chicago metropolitan area and is number one in its home state of Illinois.

Kroger can technically claim second place for the most states where it gets the most traffic when you include its subsidiaries. The Kroger brand is number one in six states including Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee and West Virginia. Fry’s Food Stores, a division of the Cincinnati-based company, is the most popular supermarket in Arizona where it has a major presence. Harris Teeter is at the top of the list in North Carolina.

Shoppers in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota prefer to do their grocery shopping at the employee owned Hy-Vee.

Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Meijer is the number one in its home state of Michigan as well as neighboring Indiana and Ohio.

ShopRite is the largest food retailer in New Jersey and the New York metropolitan area so it should be no surprise that it is number one in both New Jersey and New York.

Giant Food has scores of stores in in the Mid-Atlantic region. Residents in two of them, Maryland and Pennsylvania, make it the most visited in their states.

Publix has won a solid following in its home state and neighboring Alabama with Plato the Publixaurus, its mascot and free cookies at the bakery for children among other features of the famed Florida grocer.

There are Trader Joe’s loyalists that will go out of their way to shop at this supermarket if they need groceries when traveling. However, it is top store in only two states, California and Maine.

Based in North Carolina, Food Lion is the number one stop for groceries in neighboring states South Carolina and Virginia.

Aldi is known for low prices but only in Oklahoma is it the number one for grocery shopping. The chain recently acquired Southeastern Grocers which is the parent company of Winn-Dixie where people in Louisiana prefer to pick up groceries.

Texas shoppers list H-E-B as the top supermarket for groceries. While Sprout’s Farmers Market is the preferred choice for residents in Colorado. Regional chain Big Y tops the list in Connecticut. And in the Badger State, Wisconsinites say that Piggly Wiggly is the best.
