What is the original Grinch story? What’s the backstory of Dr. Seuss’ book?

“How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” is the original introduction to the character of the Grinch that has gone on to be synonymous with Christmas.

The Grinch character was created by Dr. Seuss, the pen name of Theodor Seuss Geisel, being first penned in 1957′s How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.

As most people know, the story revolves around a character called the Grinch, who is a grouchy, green creature with a heart “two sizes too small.” The creature first appeared in 1953 in the book Scrambled Eggs Super!. However, it is not the same character as the Christmas story, rather, this Grinch is a bird called the “Beagle-Beaked-Bald-Headed Grinch”.

What is the original Grinch story?

The Grinch lives in a cave on the outskirts of Whoville, a cheerful and festive town. The Grinch despises Christmas and all the joyous celebrations that come with it. He particularly dislikes the noise and merriment of the Whos in Whoville, who love Christmas.

In an attempt to stop Christmas from coming, the Grinch hatches a plan to steal all the presents, decorations, and food from the Whos on Christmas Eve. He disguises himself as Santa Claus and sneaks into the Whos’ homes, taking everything he can find.

However, despite the Grinch’s efforts to ruin Christmas, he discovers that the true spirit of the holiday is not dependent on material possessions. When he hears the Whos singing and celebrating despite the absence of presents, the Grinch’s heart begins to grow, and he has a change of heart. He returns all the stolen items and joins the Whos in their festivities, experiencing a transformation from a bitter and cynical creature to someone who understands the real meaning of Christmas.
